The Poker Room
Our poker room sits inside the Southern Cross Hotel building, on the corner of Princes Street and High Street in central Dunedin. This is the main live poker spot for the Otago region. It is not a single side table hidden behind the slots, but a proper area with its own structure and a Tournament Director running the schedule full time. At Grand Casino Dunedin poker you will find No-Limit Texas Hold’em, Omaha and Caribbean Stud, all alongside our other table games.
Cash tables usually run on Friday and Saturday evenings, starting from around 7:30 PM. We keep the timetable fairly tight - the Poker Tournament Director takes player enquiries directly, so you can get clear answers instead of trying to work everything out from a static page. The casino is a regulated land-based venue operating under New Zealand gambling legislation. You must be at least 20 years old to enter any gaming area, including the poker room.
Cash Game Stakes
Our regular cash game is NZ$1/2 No-Limit Texas Hold’em. In practice, the table works like this:

Omaha cash tables run beside the NLHE game whenever there is enough interest. Caribbean Stud is available too, although that is a player-versus-house table rather than a traditional live poker setup. We focus our cash games around the busy nights. It is not designed as a 24-hour card room, which for a regional player base actually suits how locals and visitors tend to play.
If you are new to live poker, it helps to sit and watch a few orbits before buying in. Our dealers can walk you through the basic hand rankings, the different betting rounds, and simple table etiquette - anything you need before your first chips go into the pot. For a first visit, that extra 10 minutes observing is usually time well spent.
One piece of general advice applies everywhere in the room: decide your total spend for the night before you buy in, instead of only thinking about it after a couple of reloads. It sounds very simple, but it changes how calmly you make decisions once you are at the table.

Joining a Cash Game
It usually pays to arrive a little before the cash table opens. Aiming for around 7:00 PM on Friday or Saturday gives you more chance of picking the seat and game you prefer, instead of walking in at 7:30 PM and finding the line already full. Bring valid photo ID for the entrance checks, as it is required for everyone coming into the gaming areas.
Once you are inside, the process is fairly straightforward. First, swap your NZD cash for chips at the cashier window, making sure you have at least the NZ$40 minimum for a buy-in. Then head over to the poker area, speak with the floor staff and confirm which formats are running and where there is a free seat.
After you sit down, the dealer will let you know from which hand you are live in the game. If at some point during your session you want to top up, you can either go back to the cashier yourself or ask the floor about a chip runner service. When you are finished for the night, simply take your remaining chips back to the cashier and cash out in NZD.
Our casino is open every day except Good Friday and Christmas Day, typically from 12:00 PM through until late in the evening. Poker cash games, though, only run during the set evening slots. It is worth checking ahead of time that the tables are scheduled for the night you are planning to visit.
